At the age of five I saw Superman fly for the first time. A short time later I watched Marty McFly travel back in time in a Delorean. These two experiences ignited my fascination with and passion for the movies.

I have been writing about film and media in different capacities for as long as I can remember. At fourteen I wrote film reviews for my high school paper and at thirty I earned a Ph.D. in cinema and cultural studies, and later served as the inaugural Provost Postdoctoral Fellow in the Humanities in the School of Cinematic Arts at the University of Southern California.

My goal is to bring an increased awareness to the practical, cultural, social, technical, and stylistic components of film and media history to a wide audience of curious students, scholars, and cinephiles.

I have taught filmmaking and media studies to undergraduate students at USC and the University of Toronto, consulted with the Toronto International Film Festival Higher Learning group, and have published widely on the history of cinema and television. I’ve been invited to speak at conferences, film festivals, and sometimes appear on the news to talk about the Oscars.

My blog, wright on film, has been my home away from media writing since 2007. It began as a respite from my graduate studies, and, in many cases, provided the springboard for many ideas that found their way into my publications, courses, and speaking engagements. The blog continues to feature ideas on different aspects of media, culture, and style.
